New USAPL EC Member:

P.J. Couvillion

To say that P.J. Couvillion has had a lifetime of involvement in strength sports may be an understatment. P.J.'s father was active in, and promoted weightlifting events before P.J. was born. He grew up idolizing yesteryear's heroes of Olympic lifting. He trained from a young age and attended many weightlifting competitions throughout his young life. P.J.'s first experience as an official came at 12 years old, when he was called on to referee a contest attended by many of the top competitors of the day. The "official" official hadn't shown up and P.J. was asked to fill in. Suffice it to say, he did a fine job, received many compliments from the competitors, and…the rest, as they say, is history.

P.J. holds many current certifications as an official. He is an IPF Category I referee, is the Head Referee for the National Strength Athletics Association and the International Federation of Strength Athletics. He has officiated "strongman competitions since 1996.

He fulfills official duties in a variety of powerlifting related capacities:

  • Hawaii State Chair
  • Recently elected USAPL Executive Committee member
  • Member of IPF Technical Committee
  • Chair, USAPL Technical Committee
  • Assistant Secretary of the IPF
  • IPF Newsletter Editor
P.J. tries to attend most National and International competitions (often at his own expense) in which USAPL members are represented. He has proven invaluable in supporting our teams and individual athletes both internationally and at home.
